FAIRFIELD, CA - The latest savings promotion to hit Wesfield Solano mall has nothing to do with end-of-the-year sales or discounts. With its new 'Go Green to Save Green' campaign, Westfield Solano is embarking on an environmental campaign to reduce its electricity and water usage.
To reduce its energy usage, the mall recently replaced its incandescent bulbs with compact florescent lamps from PG&E. The new bulbs are expected to conserve an annual average of 155,200 kilowatt hours of electricity, the equivalent to powering 24 houses for a year.
'The purpose of the campaign is to look for alternative ways to save energy and be an example for our retailers, customers and other businesses,' said Monty Stephens, general manager at Westfield Solano mall. 'It all began with us reaching out to PG&E, and then they put is in touch with the Small Business Energy Alliance, who helped us secure financing to offset some of the cost.'
Other changes include waterless urinals in the men's bathrooms and satellite-controlled irrigation system for the mall's outdoor landscaping. The WeatherTRAK satellite system monitors daily weather conditions and makes adjustments regarding how much water should be used for irrigation.
'We closely work with PG&E to support their efforts of their energy conservation program,' said James Swinger, senior project manager for the SBEA. 'Because of the mall's size, their savings are substantial and they serve as a model and leader for their tenants and customers.'
The SBEA is an energy services firm funded by Solano County that offers energy efficiency solutions to small businesses. The alliance subsidizes energy efficient retrofits, air conditioning and refrigeration system tune-ups, programmable thermostat installations and package air conditioning system replacements.
Swinger said that through the subsidized programs, the alliance paid $18,000, or 83 percent, of Westfield Solano's lighting retrofits.
'During the month of October, we plan to host 300 events across the state to give away 1 million of our CFL bulbs for our 'Change a Light, Change the World' campaign as part of Energy Awareness Month,' said Jennifer Ramp, a spokeswoman with PG&E. 'By simply changing a light bulb, you have the potential of reducing energy cost, extending the life of the bulb and reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.'
