HydroPoint Data Systems Inc., a Northern California water irrigation company, recently announced savings for the San Diego-based corporate headquarters for Jack in the Box Inc.
Using the company’s WeatherTrak Smart Water Management system, the fast-food giant reduced water bills at its corporate offices by 47 percent in four months, according to Chris Spain, chief executive officer for WeatherTrak.
Although the company has been based in Petaluma since it was founded in 2002, the majority of WeatherTrak customers are in Southern California, Spain said, citing 15,000 customers across the United States, 700 of which are in San Diego.
The private company, which does not disclose revenues, has also provided its system to local sites such as Westfield UTC, Panasonic Corp., Shea Homes and Black Mountain Ranch LLC.
What WeatherTrak does is use information about plant type and land gradient to determine the exact amount of water needed to maintain landscaping.
Water systems range from $2,000 to $10,000 and customers pay an annual subscription, about $48 for residential and $225 for commercial.
According to Spain, water savings is important for companies because "presentable landscaping is basically a business requirement," he said.
Sixty percent of San Diego customers are commercial businesses and HydroPoint Data Systems reported that the number of local customers using WeatherTrak has tripled from 2005 to 2008.
Jack in the Box is using WeatherTrak as part of its sustainability plan, said Rozlin Guthries, director of corporate facilities.
The company along with a group of students from UCSD are now researching water conservation at restaurants in California.
