HydroPoint Flows into Shopping Centers

A Bay Area company bringing online management to retail and commercial irrigation systems is slated to be part of a water conservation pilot project by a nationwide shopping center developer.

Petaluma-based HydroPoint Data Systems Inc. announced in January 2009 that Jacksonville, Fla.-based Regency Centers Corporation (NYSE: REG) plans to adopt HydroPoint's WeatherTRAK Smart Water Management system at 30 of its shopping centers in the western United States.

The move is part of an outdoor water conservation initiative launched by Regency in late 2008, focused on 36 shopping centers. Of those centers, 27 are in California, with two in Oregon and one in Washington.

Landscapes account for about 60 percent of urban water usage, and are overwatered by between 30 percent and 300 percent, according to HydroPoint. Regency estimates that it will save 42 million gallons of water annually through the deployment of HydroPoint's technology, as well as saving money on sewer overcharges and landscape maintenance stemming from overwatering. The cost savings will allow Regency to recoup the cost of adopting WeatherTRAK within two years, says Chris Spain, chief strategy officer for HydroPoint.

Based on the results of the pilot project, Regency plans to employ water conservation technology at its other properties, says Regency's vice president of sustainability Mark Peternell.

Using data delivered wirelessly from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), HydroPoint's WeatherTRAK system adjusts irrigation and watering according to local weather conditions. Through HydroPoint's Internet-based dashboard, customers can remotely track and manage irrigation systems for multiple locations. Among HydroPoint's customers are large-scale residential property management companies, corporate campuses and municipalities, including the city of Bend, Ore.
