Water Management Technology Will Save Water, Energy, Money |

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation noted that 2009 would be a very challenging year in meeting the country's irrigation water needs.
It appears we will see very low amounts of water in storage with lower than average water runoff projections, particularly in regions such as Colorado and California.
The current situation already has seen many areas move to voluntary and even mandatory water rationing.
What is more, businesses and homeowners may face tiered water rates that will strongly encourage conservation by pricing water according to levels of usage.
Regency Centers, a national owner Operator and developer of grocery-anchored and community shopping centers, recognized the resource constraints,
both fiscal and environmental, facing many companies. Regency Centers determined that by integrating sustainability strategies into its core business, it would save water, energy and money that could be
reinvested in order to retain its competitive advantage.
In order to further the sustainable strategy, the company decided to partner with HydroPoint Data Systems to launch an outdoor water conservation program at 36 properties, including five in Colorado.
HydroPoint's WeatherTRAK smart controller efficiently manages the outdoor irrigation of Regency Centers' landscaping, harnessing pinpoint microclimate weather data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
satellites. Smart water management controllers automatically schedule irrigation based on individual landscape needs. The technology of these controllers permits them to use local, square kilometer weather conditions
like rainfall, solar radiation, temperature, wind and relative humidity to regulate irrigation. This ensures that each particular landscape gets only the precise amount of irrigation it needs, saving both water
and energy and preventing runoff into storm drains.
The WeatherTRAK controllers are expected to save approximately 6 million gallons of water per year at the five Colorado properties alone. This will translate into an energy savings of 1-1/2 million watt hours of power. The water and power savings are positive steps for the environment but beyond that water agency sutdies have shown that smart irrigation controllers can cut water bills up to 40 percent. This means that the system can in some cases pay for itself in a matter of months while it keeps saving water, energy and money for years to come – an important factor in our decision to implement the system.
For all of the promise of innovative technologies in automatic irrigation systems it's important to not forget the most basic "fix" for saving water – being cognizant of overall water use, both inside and out.
Coupled with new technologies, this awareness will help to ensure a lessened impact of pending water shortages, environmental damage and energy expenditures.
