PETALUMA, CA – HydroPoint Data Systems, Inc., in a recent news release, said that its customer Campbell Union School District of Campbell, CA, saved 36 million gallons of water in 2009, returning $111,000 in savings to the district's bottom line. Campbell Union achieved these savings by replacing antiquated irrigation timers with HydroPoint's WeatherTRAK Smart Water Management systems across its 12 campuses. Cost savings achieved with the WeatherTRAK solution provide a lifeline to school programs threatened by widespread education spending cuts.
Campbell Union identified water use efficiency technology as a means to reduce costs and maximize staff productivity. In 2008, the district requested a water use audit from the Santa Clara Valley Water District to identify opportunities for water savings. The water district recommended several technologies, including faucet aerators and ultra-low-flow toilets, and revealed that smart irrigation controllers would provide the greatest water and cost savings. Based on these findings, the school district decided to address landscapes first.
With assistance from the HydroPoint Professional Services team, Campbell Union installed 45 WeatherTRAK smart controllers on 12 campuses spanning 100 acres of turf. The district's WeatherTRAK smart controllers eliminate landscape water waste by adjusting irrigation schedules automatically based on changing plant needs and local weather conditions. Plants receive only the water they need, when they need it.
The district's implementation includes Internet-enabled WeatherTRAK systems, which deliver remote management and advanced reporting capabilities, providing complete control over outdoor water use. More feature-rich and intuitive than first-generation central-control products, the wireless WeatherTRAK solution eliminates the need for customers to purchase and maintain costly weather stations, dedicated computer equipment, proprietary software, FCC licenses, telephone lines, wireless transmitters, repeaters and receivers. When field issues arise, such as a disconnected sprinkler valve, the team is immediately alerted via text messages.
“No water use efficiency technology offers better bang for the buck than WeatherTRAK,” said Campbell Union's Director of Facilities Maintenance David Radke. He explained, “We saw savings right from the start with our first water bill and achieved break-even on our investment in just eight months.”
“Programs like Campbell Union's yield positive tangible results for the entire community,” said Sharon Thompson, vice president of marketing, HydroPoint. “Their win-win water use efficiency solution directly transfers taxpayer dollars from wasteful landscape water use to classroom resources,” added Thompson.
Key benefits of the WeatherTRAK solution for Campbell Union School District:
- Reduces landscape water use by nearly 40 percent;
- Protects local ecosystems from runoff;
- Improves athletic field conditions;
- Maximizes facilities maintenance staff productivity;
- Provides positive example of water stewardship;
- Off-sets costs of other critical programs.
